Daytona State Hosts Inaugural Women's Flag Football Game
Daytona State College hosted its first official game for the new Women's Flag Football program announced in July of 2023. The Daytona State Stadium on the Daytona Beach campus was almost at its 800-seat capacity to watch the historic game. The night served as VOlusia County's first official intercollegiate Women's Flag Football game marking a huge step forward for women's sports in the community. The game was broadcasted live on WDSC-TV, Channel 15 for the local community to watch if they couldn't attend in person.
The Falcons started the season off with a bang, beating fellow Region 8 team Pasco-Hernando State College 27-0. Quarterback Ava Colubiale is credited for 2 of the 4 touchdowns and 2 extra point conversions.
The first touchdown came when Colubiale threw a 16 yard pass to Ella Casaey who then pitched it back to Kailyn Echevarria who ran another 14 yards for the touchdown. The Falcons elected to go for the 1 point conversion. The conversion was successful when Katie Rodney caught a pass from Colubiale in the end zone.
A 7 yard pass from Colubiale to Echevarria was the Falcons' second touchdown. Again electing to go for a 1 point conversion, Kiera Gomez threw to Xena Bellamy in the back of the endzone for a successful conversion.
Eight minutes into the 3rd quarter, Hailey Walsh intercepted a throw from Pasco's quarterback where she would run the ball 15 yards for the Falcons' first pick six. Colubiale ran the ball in for the 1 point conversion increasing the Flacons' lead to 21-0.
Brianna Henderson scored the last touchdown of the night right after receiving a direct snap from Adrianna Mallumaci and running the ball in 2 yards. The 1 point conversion was no good making the final score of the historic night 27-0.
The Falcons will be back in action Wednesday, March 5th when they play Siena Heights University at 5:30pm. That game will also be broadcasted live on WDSC-TV, Channel 15.
