Daytona State College Captures 4th Straight Mid-Florida Conference Title- Ridder Named NJCAA Coach of the Week
The Falcons earned the Mid-Florida Conference title in epic fashion clinching the title with a one-point win over Florida State College at Jacksonville, 84-83, at home last weekend. The Falcons were led in scoring against the Waves of FSCJ by sophomores, Alston Jones with 19, Dinero Mercurius with 17, and Nashad Mackey adding 15.
Daytona State College clinched their fourth championship under the direction of Head Coach, Ryan Ridder. Ridder has amassed an impressive 94-27 record in his four-year tenure at Daytona State College.
Two weeks ago, the Mid-Florida Conference Championship looked out of reach for the Falcons after losing a second time to conference opponent, Central Florida mid-February. With the loss to Central Florida on February 15th, the Falcons slid to 2nd in the league, putting College of Central Florida in first place. If the Patriots win out, they clinch the title and automatic berth to the Region 8 Tournament set to tip off next week. However, College of Central Florida hit a roadblock when they went up against Sante Fe College last week, February 22nd, losing 102-82.
The upset of Central Florida opened the door for the Falcons to capture their 4th consecutive Mid-Florida Conference title. They seized the opportunity with their most recent win over Florida State College at Jacksonville.
The Mid-Florida Conference title and win for the Falcons, earned Coach Ryan Ridder national recognition as he was named Week 15's Coach of the Week by Hoopdirt.com. Ridder has compiled an impressive four consecutive 20 win seasons, 4 Mid-Florida Conference titles, numerous player accolades, and his 4th straight trip to the Region 8 Tournament in his 4 seasons at the helm of Daytona State's Men's Basketball program.
