Daytona Beach, FL (November 13) Daytona State saw 3 players score double figures during their home opener, but still came up short against the #11 nationally ranked Bucs of Florida Southwestern. The loss dropped the Falcons to 2-2 on the season, while the Bucs moved to 3-2. Daytona State was led in scoring by Janay Turner with 18 and Cherelle Washington with 17. Kianni Westbrook also broke into double figures, scoring 15 points on 6-6 shooting from the field. The Falcons were led on the glass by Westbrook with 8 rebounds.
Both teams got off to a slow start, ending the 1st quarter with a 15-15 tie. Florida Southwestern was able to build a seven point lead early in the 2nd quarter, however the Falcons would make a run of their own midway through the quarter. The Bucs would hold on to retain the lead, 35-31, going into the half.
Daytona State's defense stepped it up in the 3rd quarter, holding FSW to 36% shooting in the frame. The Falcons would outscore FSW 22-18 in the 3rd, to go into the 4th quarter tied at 53. The Bucs outlasted Daytona State in the final 10 minutes of play, outscoring the Falcons 33-10. FSW's Zanautica Downs would score 17 of her game high 25 during the 4th quarter to lead FSW to victory.
Daytona State's Janay Turner shot 6-10 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line. Cherelle Washington shot 4-11 from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line. In her return to action since the 2018-19 season, Carrie Lee provided solid support off the bench with 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. The Falcons finished the game shooting 49% from the field and they also shot 72% from the free throw line.
