Daytona State College Women’s Soccer Defeats Defending National Champions
Daytona Beach, FL- The Daytona State College Women’s Soccer team defeated No. 2 and defending 2021 National Champions Eastern Florida in the Region 8 Semi-final game on Friday night by a score of 2-0.
The Falcons got the scoring going early in the match when Freshman, Akari Kishida (Tokyo, Japan) netted a free kick from 40 yards out in the 1st minute of play.
The score would stand until the 89th minute of play when Sophomore, Shania Harris (Portmore, Jamaica) would secure the game with her ninth goal of the season. Harris broke through the Titan defensive line for a breakaway in which she flicked the ball over the approaching goalkeeper to herself for a tap in with one second remaining on the clock.
“The ladies were incredible tonight, said head coach, Hope Clark. I asked them to find a goal early in the match by applying pressure on the Titans and attempt to catch them on their heels. Little did I know that goal would come in the first minute of play. It was a back and forth very high paced match between two very good teams. I loved the tenacity and grit the ladies showed tonight. It’s great to see the chemistry and passion the team is possessing at this point in the season”
Sophomore, Lucia Guemes (Ampuero, Spain) would make 7 saves on the night, leading to the eighth shutout of the season for the Falcons.
Daytona State College advances to the Region 8 Final game to be played against the #1 seed Polk State College. Game time is set for 7:00pm on Sunday, October 30th at the Daytona State College Soccer Stadium. The winner will advance the District Finals against the winner of Region 10 on November 5th.
