Daytona State Volunteers with Special Food Brings Hope Event

On December 4th, several Falcon Athletes had an opportunity to give back to the Daytona Beach local community in a special way.  Over 400 Volusia County middle school and high school students amassed on Daytona State's campus to take part in a holiday feast before heading to the News Journal Center for a holiday concert.

What makes this event so special is its connection with a special organization in Volusia County.  Food Brings Hope stands strongly behind its mission to "Nurture the body, mind and spirit of underprivileged children in the community." Through this organization and procured fundraising dollars, underprivileged children can receive meals, experiences, and opportunities that will enhance their full potential.

The student-athletes at Daytona State College have had the privilege of offering ongoing servant leadership efforts with the Food Brings Hope organization throughout the fall.  Their participation began with after school volunteering once a month at Westside Elementary in Daytona Beach.  At Westside Elementary, the Falcon Athletes have had the opportunity to be mentors for these budding individuals both on the playground and in the classroom.  During their time on the Westside campus they participate in constructive playground activities that foster teamwork, positive behavior, and overall confidence building.  The athletes' time there is concluded with quiet assisted study time back in the classroom at the close of the program's day.

Through a forged relationship with Judi Winch, the VP of the Food Brings Hope organization, the Falcons were able to participate in their third straight Food Brings Hope Holiday Dinner.  Falcon Volleyball, Softball, and Baseball contributed over 30 volunteers that assisted in providing dinner, tours of campus, and recreational activities throughout the night.

The evening was a success, capped off by the Volusia County Students enjoying a concert at the News Journal Center.
