Daytona State's women's cross country team placed runner up on Saturday at the Embry Riddle Invitational in Daytona Beach, and also took top junior college of the field honors. The Falcons scored 59 points and placed first among junior colleges. Embry Riddle took home the team title with 17 points. The Falcons were led by freshman Emma Turner for the third straight week. Turner was the second junior college runner to cross the finish line. "Everyone knows that this course is unforgiving. The footing is a challenge, the hills can be brutal. It is a real test of someone's mental strength. Emma ran very well and her time of 20:18 for the 5000 meter distance will convert to low 19's on another course." commented Coach Judy Wilson. Next to cross the line for the Falcons was Brianna Crawford, now in her second year for Daytona State Cross Country, after playing soccer for two years at Daytona State. "Bri is really coming around as a runner. She spent last year learning how to train for running and then this summer, her fitness took her to another level. It will be exciting to see how she develops with each race." said Wilson. Crawford finished 13th with a time of 20:32. Freshman Kyleigh Halloran was third for the Falcons in 18th place with a time of 21:38, followed closely by Tiffany Cox in 19th place with a time of 21:51. Kennedy Flores and Maya Horel both crossed the line only a second apart in 22:06 and 22:07. Both placed in the top 25 of the field. The Falcons will head to the Florida State Invitational for the their one and only 6000 meter race of the season.
